Overtime, the curtains in our home silently collect dust, absorb smells, and wear down. We don’t think about curtains much — until they start looking a bit off.
Maybe it’s that stale smell every time you open the window. Or the strange stain that appeared during last year’s steamboat session.
So how do you know when it’s time to wash them… or toss them?
If your curtains still smell funky after a proper wash, it could mean the fabric has absorbed too much moisture over the years — especially in Singapore’s humid weather. Mould and mildew can embed deep into the fibres, and no amount of Febreze will save them.
✔ Wash if: It’s a light musty smell and it’s been a while since the last wash.
❌ Toss if: They still smell after a full deep clean or dry clean.
Common culprits? Aircon drips, cooking oil splashes, or even handprints near the edges. But the real silent killer? Sun exposure. Prolonged sunlight can bleach and weaken fabric, especially on lighter curtains.
✔ Wash if: The stains are surface-level or from recent events.
❌ Toss if: The fabric looks patchy, feels brittle, or tears easily when tugged.
Curtains are dust magnets. If you or your family members start sneezing whenever you’re near them — or your asthma or sinus issues flare up — it’s a sign they’re harbouring allergens.
✔ Wash if: You haven’t cleaned them in 3-6 months.
❌ Toss if: They’ve never been washed, or they still trigger allergies after washing.
Curtains that hang awkwardly, have uneven hems, or keep slipping off the rod might have stretched or warped over time.
✔ Wash if: They’re wrinkled but structurally sound. A steam press may do the trick.
❌ Toss if: The shape is permanently distorted, the seams are undone, or the eyelets are breaking.
Sometimes it’s not wear and tear — it’s just time for a fresh look. If you’ve updated your wall paint, furniture, or decor theme, your current curtains may clash with the new vibe.
✔ Wash if: You want to reuse them elsewhere or donate them.
❌ Toss (or repurpose) if: They’re outdated and don’t match your current style
To delay the toss, make washing a routine. We recommend cleaning your curtains every 4 to 6 months, especially if:
